July Favourites 2014

This year is moving too fast for my liking. There are just under 5 months left until Christmas! Who's got a christmas shopping list ready?

Here are my July Favourites

Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation
I'm still in love with this foundation. I can't believe how much coverage I get with it. I think the colour is a touch too light for me so I have purchased the next darkest colour and I mix these together.

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Palette
I can't wait to do a full review on this but so far I've been enjoying the colours and the pigmentation. I love the variety of colours.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush
This has made it back into my favourites this month. The colour goes so well with some of the eyeshadow combos that I've been doing with the Chocolate Bar eyeshadows.

MAC Lipstick in Patisserie
This has been a favourite bridal colour in my makeup kit and a few weeks ago I decided to go out and get one for my personal collection. So in love with it. The perfect nude with a touch of pink.

Benefit Gimme Brow
This little number has been perfect for the busy days where I don't have too much time to pencil in my eyebrows. It's quick and gives my eyebrows just enough colour to make them appear fuller.

The Body Book by Cameron Diaz
A none beauty item, but this book is amazing. It's unlike anything else I've ever read about health and it's written so well so well and is very easy to understand. I don't get a chance to read it every day but I've already learnt so much through it.

What were some of your favourites in July?

My Favourite Eye Brushes

I thought I'd share with you today my favourite Eye Brushes.

Eyeshadow brushes are one of the most important ones to me personally so I thought I'd share the ones that I reach for the most in my personal collection.

1. Eco Tools Full Eyeshadow Brush
This is dense and flat eyeshadow brush. I love this one to apply eyeshadow all over the lid including the brow bone.

2. Sigma E25 Blending Brush
The white hair Sigma brushes are made of goat hair and are perfect for application of eyeshadow where I don't want too much colour pay off such as the outer V.

3. Bdellium Tools 781 Brush
This is a small blending brush that is very dense and precise. I usually use this one to do a cut crease look and apply any dark eyeshadows in the crease and outer V.

3. Sigma E35 Tapered Blending Brush
Another goat hair brush. I use this one for all over blending of eyeshadows as it's really soft and fluffy and does an amazing job of blending all the colours together.

4. Sigma E38 Diffused Crease Brush
I love using this one to blend my eyeshadow colours in the crease and outer V together. It's not as fluffy as the E35 and therefore blends more on specific areas.

6. Chanel No 4. Brush
I use this brush to apply a soft line of eyeshadow to the upper and lower lashes or to highlight the brow bone and tearduct. I will also use it sometimes to draw a precise line on the outer V or in the crease.

7. Sigma E65 Small Angle Brush
This is the perfect brush to apply gel eyeliner and to fill in your eyebrows as it's quite short and dense and doesn't wriggle around.

I know I have quiet a few Sigma brushes in my collection but I find they do such a wonderful job and last a very long time. The best part about them is that they keep their shape after you wash them.

What are your favourite brushes?

Christian Dior DiorShow New Look Mascara Review

I've never been a huge fan of Dior mascaras. There was always something about them that just did not work for me. Last year I received a little Dior Compact Travel pack for my birthday and it had a sample size of this mascara. I used the compact but threw the mascara in a draw and forgot about it. A few months later it was the only one left after my son had left open all of my other mascaras and they had completely dried out. (Naughty Naughty)

At first I wasn't overly impressed, but I persisted and it is one of my favourites at the moment.

The Packaging
The packaging is classic Dior. Black, glossy and luxurious. The actual mascara brush is surprisingly small, which makes getting to those tiny eyelashes a dream. It's a rubber wand with two noticeable sections to it. The wand is also very soft and moves with application.

The Product
I have the colour black (it comes in brown and blue) and it's the blackest black that I've had with a mascara for a long time. My eyelashes are very thin and short but this gives them volume and length. I still prefer my Maybelline Colassol mascara for extreme volume, but this is nice when you don't want that much volume on your lashes. The one thing I love about this product is that it lengthens the eyelashes and I can get to the littlest lash thanks to the small wand. It also has a slight wet look even when dry but according to the Dior website, this mascara was formulated to do that.

What I Like
Everything about it just seems to work for me for some reason. I'm not usually a fan of small rubber bristles on my mascara wand but this just works. The colour is amazing and the longevity on this one is great. I can apply this in the morning and it will still look the same at the end of the day. I've done the sleeping in it test (I know I know) and the crying test, and even thought it's not waterproof it did not move.
No Mascara
2 Coats of the Dior New Look Mascara
What I Don't Like
The price. At $52 AUD it is extremely overpriced considering it is only $28.50 USD in the States.

Overall I'm really happy with this mascara especially when purchased outside Australia.

Have you tried this DiorShow New Look Mascara?

Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette Look 1

As promised here is one of my favourite looks using only the Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette. I love this look using these particular colours because you can make it as dark or as light as you like all by blending the colours. This is one of those looks that you can take from day to night simply by intensifying the outer corner of your eye.

Step 1 - Apply Primer to the eyelids.

Step 2 - Take the colour Darkside and apply it to the outer corner of your eye.

Step 3 - Take the colour Nooner and apply it to your crease. Use a fluffy blending brush and blend away all the rough edges.

Step 4 - Take the colour Dust and apply it to the inner corner of your eyes including the tear duct and blend towards the centre of the eyelid.

Step 5 - Take the colour Buzz and apply it to the centre of your eyelid blending it towards the inner and outer corner of the eye.

Step 6 - Take a clean blending brush and blend the colours on the eyelid together and slowly taking it up into the crease.

Step 7 - Take the colour Dust and Buzz and apply it to the entire lower lashline.

Step 8 - Take the colour Darkside and apply to the outer 3rd of your lower lashline and blend away with the same blending brush as in step 6.

Step 9 - Take the colour Strange and apply that to the brow bone

Step 10 - Apply Eyeliner drawing a winged line and follow up with mascara and fake eyelashes if you like.

Essie "Merino Cool" Review

Those who follow me on Instagram know that I've recently purchased two (yes TWO) bottles of the Essie Merino Cool Nail polish on 2 separate occasions. I guess that just means that I really like this colour.

As with all Essie nail polishes this one is a light consistency that's easy to apply. The first application was very streaky and definitely needed a second coat.

The colour is a combination of grey and taupe and is a winter shade in my opinion. I like dark nails in winter but don't always feel like wearing black, navy or burgundy so this is a breath of fresh air this winter.

Have you tried Merino Cool before?

Laura Mercier Lip Stain in Shy Pink and Sugar Violet Review

I was buying a Laura Mercier foundation one day and these little lip stains caught my eye. I picked up the colours Shy Pink and Sugar Violet. Shy Pink is a light pink shade that is very close to being my natural lip colour. The Sugar Violet is a deep berry pink with some very faint glitter.

According to Laura Mercier's website the Lip Stains are described as having "the visual effect of a  stain with the comfort and sheen of a lipgloss".

I'm going to have to disagree with her on this one. The name "lip stain" is misleading. Stains are usually products that add pigmentation to the lips and get absorbed by the lips so you don't feel anything. A lip stain is also long lasting and requires a makeup remover at the end of the day to remove the colour off your lips. This product is not like that. It doesn't absorb into the lips like a stain and will transfer onto glass or your husband even an hour after applying it. After the hour it sort of seems to dry up and stay put for about 3-4 hours but it does fade after eating or drinking or kissing.

The pigmentation on these is good for what it is and it doesn't feel sticky. That being said it's not very moisturising and I found it quiet drying on my lips especially in cooler weather, but if you pop a lip balm on first than the products doesn't sink into the lips at all.

To me this is a matte lipstick in a jar that comes in classic shades but can be a bit of a hassle to re-apply as you need to use your fingers or a lip brush. Would I buy it again? Probably not.

Let’s Talk About Weightloss - Introducing Amy

Amy is one of those people who well and truly inspire me. She is one of the nicest people I have come across along my journey and is always there to give a helping hand and is ready to listen and give advice whenever you need it. Amy has come such a long way. She started her weightloss journey 15 months ago weighting 165kg and has lost a total of 71.8kg to date. This path has led her to things she never thought possible 15 months ago. She will be a qualified Life and Wellness Coach in 12 weeks. I can’t think of anyone better who could do this job.

Let's get on to the little interview!

What was the catalyst for you wanting to lose weight?
The reason for losing weight, was because I had suffered a severe miscarriage that consequently kept giving me a ongoing uterus infection.
I was also suffering with blood pressure problems, it would hurt to bend down to pick up toys for my little one, walking up the stairs was hard and getting in and out of the car was really challenging and I was always questioning if I could get a chair or if it would hold my weight. I was 25 at the time, so it wasn't a good lifestyle for me.

Prior to this successful weightloss, how many times have you attempted to get fit and healthy and failed?
I have never attempted to lose weight. I dabbled a bit with eating "better" before I got married but never actually exercised, counted calories, drank 3 litres of water a day. I guess you could say I was in denial about what I looked like and was comfortable knowing I was getting married.

What keeps you motivated?
I keep myself motivated. Knowing I will never be that size again and how much better I feel. I look at my children and they motivate me to keep going. I also find new challenges keep me focused, fresh and motivated.

Has your weightloss journey affected your relationship with your partner, friends and family?
For me, friendships have come and gone through this process, some very emotionally hard to let go of but in a way you have to step back because you are changing daily and your focus has changed and for me, losing people (as hard and sad as it is) they are the people that don't support you, and you can't change and stay the same, so go with the flow, it's ok to let go, this is a whole other chapter of your life.

You need to evaluate who your support and strengths are and who are the people that will unfortunately not give you the love and support YOU need as selfish as it is, in the end you have made this choice to be a better you and some things have to go like everything in life you get over things.
My family are very supportive so much so the children actually workout with me now.

How did you overcome those dreaded cravings?
For me my cravings where chocolate based, I used to hide chocolate around my house when I was bigger, self sabotaging myself and just having it whenever I felt like it. I find now with good nutrition I don't "crave" as much chocolate as I used to. I also believe it's a chemical reaction in the brain. If I'm sad bored or tired I will get a craving. It happened a lot more to me in the beginning of 12wbt because I got rid of the "comfort food" which was slowly killing me. I now asses what's going on in my life BEFORE I opt for anything, how am I feeling, why am I feeling this way? Do I really want what I'm craving?
I opt for green tea usually, which took a while to get used to or a Jarrah hot chocolate. Warmth always makes me feel more "full". I'll eat a banana or a rice cake and jazz it up with salmon if I'm really needing a "hit".
However it all comes with time. You’re programming yourself, your body and your brain.
Our biggest downfall is letting that little voice say "go on you can have it" because if you listen to it your shooting yourself in the foot. And then you feel guilty for doing it and then completely freak out. So really what's the point in having it if it's going to cause you all that drama.

Healthy eating is often one of the most challenging parts of losing weight. Did you struggle with the emotional and psychological aspect of changing the way you eat?
Yes I struggled with the psychological side of things but basically I just sucked it up and kept going because no one else was going to do it for me. People would probably be more leaning towards "poor Amy, have a cup of coffee and cake, you'll feel better". No, you see that's rubbish, caffeine and sugary foods make you "feel better" but then it all goes away and the vivacious circle begins again, so just get on with what you have to do.

What was your biggest downfall during this journey?
My biggest downfall I suppose it was the start. I realised how much food I USED to eat and programming my body and brain not to eat almost 8 to 10 hours straight was hard because I was always picking at food regardless if it was breakfast lunch or dinner. I was a food addict and instead of 3 meals a day with 2 snacks I'd eat 4 snacks and 6 meals!

What do you eat on a typical day?
A typical day is 3 meals a day and 2 snacks.
An egg white omelette with veggies or porridge.
I also like to drink a litre of water in the morning to keep me hydrated .
Morning Snack
Green tea with rice cakes
I love mountain bread, so I'll fill it with nutritious food that keeps me going
Make sure you eat some protein in there too
Afternoon Snack
Green tea / water and I like capsicum or carrot sticks with hummus
I'm a bit of a curry girl so I'll do a chicken curry or if the kids request anything it’s always thai chicken patties
Always served with a warm or cold salad

What are your top 5 tips to others wanting to lose weight?
Top 5 tips are
GET RID all your junk food and never go into the chocolate or lolly isle again, it's a no go zone.
DRINK your water
EXERCISE in the morning, it gives you more energy then it's DONE for the day
GOALS - you need these to keep you motivated
Buy something you want in a smaller size and it's doesn't matter how long it takes you to fit into it, the main thing is that IT’S ON.
LET GO - of all that negative things that are holding you back. Just cut the rubbish and be who you want to be and GO GO GO! Stop SELF SABOTAGING NO MORE EXCUSES

How did being overweight make you feel in day to day life?
Being overweight never made me feel anything other than that. That was who I was at that point in my life, however it's the way society deals with you. I'll always be the curvy, out there person, however I feel like my breathing is so much better, I'm able to play with the kids and not get tired, I'm able to say NO to having a kebab for example followed by a muffin, because I don't need it. I suppose I always felt "empty" like I had to "prove who I was because I was a size 26", because I knew I was bigger then everyone else in my family, so subconsciously I would eat to fill that void of being the black sheep.

How do you feel in day to day life now that you’re healthier and fitter?
Now that I'm healthier an fitter I don't wear any more make up.
I remember I would cake it on as if to say "my face is on so if my face is on no one will look at my body".
Eventually I just became sick to death of putting it on. I’m not hiding behind a pile of make up anymore. I’ve worked hard for my body and my brain to work this way.

If you could give one piece of advice to a busy, sleep deprived mum, what would it be?
To the busy sleep deprived mummy's

I HEAR YOU i have 2 kids myself who are 15 months apart.
My advice, as much as everyone will hate me is to be more organised
Not list making organised
But at home organised
Lunches, dinners and snacks ready. If your kids are early risers like my two are you need to give yourself "me time" before they wake up if you can, so for me that’s at 4.45am and I'm on the cross trainer or I'm walking and then I come home and I'm ready for the morning porridge on the stove, kids have a way of working around you! If you can't do that then try and find a gym with a crèche or train on the days they are at preschool or primary school or when your partner can look after them.
However if they are young I urge you to get them in a stroller and walk with them, show them your working hard and they will grow with you.
Do something fun. Zumba always gets my two bopping. It's never going to be easy with kids. My daughter is a fussy eater but she has exactly what we have and there's nothing better then having 5 hours of sleep followed by a crazy morning, so just relax but take charge. If you want this you will make this work NO MATTER WHAT trust me!!!!!

Thinking back, is there anything you would do differently?
No I would never do anything differently this is the way it happened and I'm just glad I'm on the earth still being me and learning new things.

As you can see, Amy has come such a long way in 15 months. If you want to keep track of her journey, you can follow her on Instagram
